Lottie Dalziel

Banish

Returning for our third year, we'll run two activations. The first turns bottle top lids into pens, showing people what happens to an item their kerbside bin won't take and proving that "hard to recycle" doesn't mean "worthless". The second is beeswax wrap making, giving attendees a reusable alternative to cling film that they've made themselves and are far more likely to actually use.

Both tie directly into BRAD, the Banish Recycling and Diversion Program, one of Australia's largest hard-to-recycle collection programs. In 2024 BRAD diverted over one million pieces of plastic waste from landfill. The festival is a chance to bring that program to people who've never heard of it, and to answer the question we hear most often: I want to do better, but where do I start?

Lottie Dalziel started Banish in 2018 with a simple idea: give people somewhere to take what their kerbside bin couldn't. Old pens, bottle caps, soft plastics and coffee pods, otherwise headed for landfill.

That idea grew into one of Australia's most recognised sustainability stores, and home to BRAD, the Banish Recycling and Diversion Program. Banish opened its Haymarket hub in 2023, and in 2024 BRAD diverted more than a million pieces of plastic waste from landfill.

Lottie came from media, and it shows in how she talks about sustainability. No doom, no guilt. Just practical information that meets people where they are, and something specific to do.
